Kava Preparation

Traditional Preparation

The traditional way to prepare kava is to strain the kava powder in water.

The strainer can be a piece of muslin cloth, cheese cloth or even a nylon stocking.

Use 25 - 50 grams (2-4 tablespoons) of Kava per person.

Add the kava to the strainer bag and twist the top of the bag shut tightly so no kava spills out.

Now plunge the kava in and out of a bowl of water. The amount of water varies depending on the strength of the brew with about 1 litre per person being a good starting point. Squeeze and plunge the strainer bag for about 10 minutes. Really get your hands to work the strainer bag and squeeze out all the psychoactive Kavalactones.

The kava is drunk 1/2 to 1 coconut shell at a time, usually in 1-2 gulps. Wait approx 10 minutes before having refill and repeat as desired.

Modern Preparation

Modern Kava preparation often consists of using a blender to do the mixing for you.

Add 2-4 tablespoons of Kava to blender with 1-2 cups water and blend on high for 2-3 minutes.

Strain and serve.

You can produce a much stronger brew by blending 50 gram Kava with 1 cup warm water, 1 cup milk or coconut milk and 1 tablespoon leticthin or hemp seed oil.

Strain and drink.

The oils in the brew help extract the psychoactive Kavalactones, as well as increase absorbion.

To make the brew more tasty you may wish to add hot chocolate, chocolate sause (or similar). This should be done after the straining stage.
